Vision and Mandate
Vision
To ensure every community member has access to safe,
affordable, and high-quality housing that supports
well-being, dignity, and long-term community growth.
Mission
The Housing and Community Development Department is committed to working in partnership with Chief and Council, the Housing Committee, governments, and regional partners to deliver sustainable housing solutions. We provide leadership in the construction of new homes, the renovation and maintenance of existing units, and the enforcement of provincial and federal building codes. Through effective planning, policies, and capital project management, we strive to meet the housing needs of our membership while creating training and employment opportunities that build skills, strengthen capacity, and support self-reliance in our community.
Description
The Housing Committee works with the Director of Community Development and Housing and reports to the Chief and Council. We collaborate with government agencies and regional partners. Our department ensures that community members have access to affordable, suitable, and adequate housing. This mandate encompasses the construction of new homes to reduce homelessness, as well as the completion of both minor and major renovations for existing housing units within the community.
The housing portfolio currently consists of 102 units, including band-owned homes, Indigenous Services Canada (ISC)-funded homes, and Section 95 (CMHC) homes. All housing is maintained in compliance with applicable provincial and federal building codes and standards, thereby ensuring safety, habitability, and regulatory conformity.
The Department also administers housing programs and policies that govern the planning, scheduling, initiation, and management of all capital projects. In addition, training and employment opportunities are integrated into departmental activities. This includes structured, on-the-job apprenticeship programs designed to provide band members with practical skills and work experience in construction and carpentry.
