Social Development is about inspiring and improving the well-being of our members by investing in them and their experiences. It means standing by them during challenging times and supporting their healing, so we can grow stronger together as a community
Social Development Programs Ontario Works Program –
OW is a part-time delivery service that provides our low-income families and individuals
with basic needs and shelter costs. OW also provides a limited budget of Transitional Support/Discretionary Funds following the Ministry of Community & Child Social Services policy and guidelines for clients who need emergency assistance with different areas,
such as moving costs, employment start-ups, and furniture, etc., referral Services
to outside agencies within our administration.
Driver’s License & IDs Program – Financially assist all members to obtain a valid Ontario Driver’s License G1, G2 and Gs. This program is to help our members become independent and obtain employment that requires a valid driver’s license.
Food Voucher Program (Monthly) – Assisting Ontario Works Clients, ODSP Clients & Elders (55+) living in the community with AAN’s Food Voucher Program. On an emergency/case-by-case basis, be given out to members living on the reserve only. A Food Committee was created in December 2024 by a few departments that will be responsible for the Community Food Baskets for the holidays going forward.
Empowerment & Healing Pathways to Employment Program –
(NEW PROGRAM STARTING NOVEMBER 2025)
The AAN Employment Program is designed to assist our members who are in recovery to gain successful employment within our organization. Providing the training, tools, and support to our members to be successful and empowered by working for their community and providing for their families and becoming more independent
Family Well Being Support – The Family Well Being Program focuses is to delivering support to families through programs and activities to begin repairing and rebuilding relationships as a family. Practice healthy family routine, support families and focus on prevention-based programs.
Food Voucher Program – This program provides emergency food vouchers to community members in need. We also distribute community baskets during special holidays, ensuring every home in the community receives essential food items.
Family Wellbeing Program – This program is dedicated to empowering families through holistic and culturally appropriate healing and prevention services. Our activities include crockpot meal preparation, distribution of bikes to promote outdoor activities, meal prep sessions, “Mommy and Me” and “Daddy and Me” days, Easter egg hunts, and the distribution of Christmas family baskets.
NNADAP (National Native Alcohol and Drug Abuse Program) – This program is responsible for providing treatment, pre-treatment, and post-treatment services to clients struggling with addiction. We screen and assess clients’ needs, maintain liaison with healing agencies, and provide relevant education to clients and the community. Our services include NA weekly meetings, referrals to detox and treatment centers, and transportation services for those seeking treatment.
Recreation & Wellness Program (Adults/Elders) – Our Recreation & Wellness Program began in the spring of 2021. The focus is to deliver active and healthy workshops and programs for our community. The Recreation Coordinator manages the community gym that allows members to go exercise when they want.
Legal Support – Assist and support with the client’s ongoing court services. Rehabilitation to clients recovering from the impacts of the Justice System.
Transportation Support Program – Providing Support to our clients for groceries and other programs where transportation is needed.
Emergency Support Program – The Emergency Support program is for members of Apitipi Anicinapek Nation who are experiencing difficult times, and if all other avenues have been exhausted. A policy has been in place since March 2018.
Funeral Support Program – Financial support for AAN members and their families who are experiencing the loss of a family member. Cultural support begins right away with a 4-day sacred fire. Counselling support is offered during this time to the family.
Next Steps – Moving Forward
- Revisiting and amending the Social Development Emergency Policy, which includes the Food Security and Funeral Policy and Procedures.
- Establish a working group of AAN members to help review all Social Development policies/procedures and share ideas about Social Programming.
- Restructuring Social Development mainly, and beginning with the NNADAP Programs and Services.
- Securing funding and support to renovate an existing building in the community for Social Development.
- License Recovery Program assists members in repayment of fines – policy on going as of September 29, 2025.
- Focusing on Community Healing, Wellness and Lateral Kindness.
